Job Purpose & Primary Objectives:

Benchmark Space Systems is seeking a Propulsion and Fluid Systems Engineer to help us define the new space ecosystem. Your work would include clearly defining fluid system requirements, construction of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), COTS component sourcing and qualification, custom component development, and component/system level test and verification. In this role you would act as a fluid system components subject matter expert to help bridge the gap between mechanical design and thruster development. This candidate would also work closely with external suppliers and the Benchmark procurement and management teams to ensure program success.

Applicants should be comfortable working on a small team supporting multiple fast-paced projects. As part of the Engineering Department, this candidate would work closely with mechanical design, electrical, software, and systems engineers throughout the full product life cycle. With that said, there are primary job responsibilities and measurements of success for this position, which are:

  • Act as component and system level responsible engineer and fluid system subject matter expert on multiple programs/projects.
  • Work under the direction of Team Leads, Program Management, and the Chief Engineer to develop fluid delivery systems for new customer configurations.
  • Plan and execute custom component development and acceptance/qualification testing.
  • Support procurement group by performing initial sourcing, quoting and supplier communications.
  • Create and maintain Plumbing & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID).
  • Calculate pressure budget and maximum expected operating pressures.

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or other relevant STEM fields.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience working with propulsion/fluid systems.
  • Experience working with common propulsion/fluid system components including but not limited to valves, regulators, pressure transducers, pumps, and tanks.
  • Experience developing or working with P&IDs (Visio or similar).

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, etc.)
  • Capable of solving complex problems with little to no supervision.
  • Due to federal contract obligations and ITAR restrictions, must be a US citizen.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5-10 years of professional experience working with liquid propulsion systems.
  • Familiarity with green propellants such as high-test hydrogen peroxide (HTP).
  • Practical experience with fluid fittings.
  • Hands on/lab experience with fluid systems.
  • Experience with lower thrust (1-500 N) in-space propulsion systems.
  • Basic knowledge of satellite subsystems and operations.
  • Previous startup or small company experience.
